EXTRUSION COATING & LAMINATING LINES

A typical extrusion coating line consists of a continuous unwind, surface treatment system, extrusion system, a laminator, laminate unwind, trim system, thickness gauging system, and continuous winder. The extrusion laminating process is used to produce laminations of paper, film, and/or foil substrates for many applications including flexible packaging materials, liquid packaging including milk and juice cartons, various automotive products, construction materials, and industrial products.

The continuous unwind can be either a turret type machine or a dual fixed position unwind system. This is usually followed by some type of surface treatment system to improve adhesion with the extrudate material. This could include a corona treater, flame treater, chemical primer, or a combination. The extrusion system includes the extruder or co-extruders, melt filtration, adapter, and slot die. The die is usually positioned vertically above the laminating nip. The laminator includes a double shell cooling roll and nip roller. The cooling roll is used to cool the extrudate and sometimes, in the case of extrusion coating, to impart a particular finish on the surface of the web. Circulating cold water from the heat transfer system cools the rolls. The sizes of the rolls are designed using Marshall and Williams Plastics' exclusive heat transfer program. Trim slitters are used to remove the edge bead and trim the edge of the web. A thickness gauging system is used to monitor the thickness of the web in both the machine direction and cross machine direction. Closed loop feedback control may be used to adjust the die and/or extruder speed. The continuous winder can be either a turret center wind or a surface type winder. Automatic roll and shaft handling equipment are sometimes provided for winders with short cycle times.

M&W custom builds extrusion laminating machines to meet a wide range of materials and production requirements. M&W extrusion laminating machines are designed to meet your most demanding application requirements.
