Parkinson Technologies Adds In-Line Compounding Capabilities To In-House Customer Lab Facility

Leistritz Twin-Screw Extruder Added to List of Available Machinery

February 18, 2008
Woonsocket, RI-USA

Parkinson Technologies Inc., a leading global provider of winding, web handling, and plastics orientation equipment for the continuous web processing market, has announced it has added additional processing capabilities to its in-house customer lab by installing a new Leistritz 27mm co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The extruder provides in-line compounding capabilities to the lab, and feeds directly into Parkinson's Marshall & Williams biax orientation line.

Parkinson's in-houe lab provides customers with an ideal platform for running tests on new material formulations for plastics sheet and film, to prove-out their new concepts in a real-world pilot-scale oreintation facility. Capabilities and typical applications include:

- extruded film/sheet casting
- MDO, TDO, and biax stretching
- film/sheet product and process development for shrink sleeves, labels, flexible and rigid packaging, display technologies, battery separator and fuel cell memebranes, solar photovoltaic devices, and more
- and now, in-line twin-screw extruder compounding

An important benefit of Parkinson's lab is that it is pilot-scale as opposed to laboratory-scale, according to Ken Forziati, Business Development Manager at Parkinson. "It means our customers can produce product samples on a smaller scale than full production, but a larger scale than a lab," he said. "Pilot-scale production in our facility allows you to run an effective experiment, one that gives a true reading of how your material and product will perform in a production-scale environment, using only a fraction of the raw materials that would otherwise be required."

"The addition of the Leistritz twin-screw extruder to our lab is great news for our customers," Forziati continued. "With in-line compounding they can vary the concentration of ingredients on the fly rather than having to pre-compound batches of material. Since installing it we have seen increased usage of the lab, which in turn has helped our customers achieve success with their new applications."

The Leistritz twin-screw extruder in Parkinson's lab is a Model ZSE27 HP, and can be configured to process a wide variety of materials. Typical throughput for the machine in Parkinson's lab is up to 55kg/hr (120 lbs/hr) depending on the application.
