Parkinson Technologies To Present Paper On Compression Roll Drawing Technology At Advances In Extrusion Conference
December 2, 2008
Woonsocket, RI
Parkinson Technologies will present a technical paper on Compression Roll Drawing (CRD) technology at the upcoming Advances In Extrusion Conference in New Orleans. The conference, sponsored by Plastics Technology magazine and Polymer Process Communications, is being held from December 9-10 a the New Orleans Marriott hotel.
Parkinson is also a sponsor of the conference, which will feature two days of technical presentations by some of the world's best-known authorities on extrusion. Stepehn Montalto, Parkinson's Director of Sales and Marketing, will give a presentation entitled "Compression Roll Drawing MDO of PP Sheet for Theromoforming Applications".
Parkinson Technologies is the worldwide exclusive licensee of the CRD process for machine direction orientation (MDO) sheet extrusion systems. Parkinson can sublicense CRD technology to its customers when they purchase a Marshall and Williams Plastics MDO system. The Marshall & Williams Plastics Extrusion & Orientation Pilot Lab Facility has an MDO equipped with CRD capability that is available for customer use.
CRD is the simultaneous compression and machine direction orientation of plastic material. MDO sheet extrusion systems mechanically stretch the sheet to improve physical properties such as tensile strength, stiffness, barrier, and optics, but due to the nature of polypropylene, it has not previously been possible to use the process to enhance PP sheet for thermoforming applications. CRD technology now enables thermoformers to use MDO systems, resulting in improved processing, products displaying enhanced and more uniform clarity, and in some cases significantly improved low temperature impact toughness. Typical applications for CRD technology are rigid (thermoformed) and flexible packaging.
In summary, key benefits of CRD include:
- Uniform draw (stretch) at lower than typical draw ratios
- Machine Direction Orientation can be maximized
- Greater finished thicknesses
- Increased tensile strength and modulus
- Improved clarity
Parkinson has conducted numerous trials with The Dow Chemical Company to illustrate and document the advantage of CRD technology for uniaxially oriented polypropylene sheet. Dow materials were processed at Parkinson's Marshall and Williams Plastics Extrusion and Orientation Pilot Lab Facility to produce CRD OPP sheet samples. Properties testing and thermofrorming trials were then conducted on these samples at Dow's testing facilities in Midland, MI. Results and analysis of these tests will be presented.
